You are allowed to give your dog buffered asprin, just consult a vet on dosage. Also Glucosamine and Condrotin supplaments help, as well as slimming her down. Labs tend to be overweight and it works against them. You should be able to feel the ribs without appling pressure, feel the hip bones, have a nice tucked tummy, and feel the vertebrae down the back. This will greatly help with dysplasia. Also consider a strength/conditioning program of low impact exercise. This will help strengthen the muscles around the hips and help keep things in place. Depending on where you live there are places that offer underwater treadmills, chiropractic service, and acupuncture to help releave pain. Do not know about over the counter, but get her started on a daily maintenance of glucosomen - I know that is spelled incorrectly, but hopefully you know what I mean. Out vet recommended Glucosamine Chondroitin over the counter, for human use.There are pet versions of it available, but they are much more expensive and work in the same way.Keeping your dogs weight down is important, my dog loved to swim, so we made sure she went to the beach a few times a week. There are actually classes in swimming offered through many dog day cares and kennels now, just check with some of your local vets.When our dog was achy, she would love to see the GC bottle come out of the cabinet, she knew that it helped her. It is much more gentle on the liver and kidneys than a lot of the pain meds.When our dog would get achy in the cold during the winter, we would warm up some of those herbal wraps in the microwave, the ones that are made for headaches and backaches, just warm to the touch and she would love to lie down with them on her joints. You can get the same effect by filling a tube sock with rice, and warming that in the microwave.
